I asked Gov. Mike Beebe's office yesterday for a response to the federal lawsuit that argues that the Arkansas constitutional and statutory bans on same-sex marriage violate the U.S. Constitution's equal rights and due process protections.
Matt DeCample provided this response today:
The only filings I anticipate our office submitting will be to contest the governor's inclusion as a party in the lawsuit, as he has no enforcement role relating to Amendment 83.
I think it is safe to say a different governor — Asa!, for example — would have taken the opportunity to sermonize on this occasion. For that, disappointing as Beebe is on equality for sexual minorities, he still gets some credit.
