Mark Darr warns of dependency on government. Really.

  • COCKEYED OPTIMIST: Lt. Gov. Mark Darr.
Since even most Republicans say Lt. Gov. Mark Darr's political career has likely topped out at his current not-so-rarified level, I offer this mostly for comic relief.

The former pizza parlor operator, recently subject of a foreclosure action on his home mortgage, is decrying the encroachment of socialism in America. (What? You didn't know that black Muslim in the White House was a socialist?)

Anyway, to quote Darr's weekly utterance:

This election, we find our country is at a crossroads. I never thought it would come to this in America.
When Ronald Reagan was president, our country stood against socialism. All over the world, American effort and treasure was spent trying to defeat it. Now we are seeing this encroaching ideology infect our own political and economic system. We must continue to defeat it or it will consume our nation.

Too many people now think that it is the job of the government to provide whatever they need. Where has American optimism and individualism gone? Where is that sense of being independent and self-sufficient? Many of our neighbors do need help and I understand that. Many other Americans are simply losing hope. Thousands of people have left the workforce. Dependence on government social programs is skyrocketing.

Depending on government to provide? Looking to government for health insurance? Seeing government as a source of free meals (and drinks)? Not paying one's bills? Hmmm. I can think of a number of people who fit that description. Can't you? And I don't just mean Darr. He has a number of his otherwise unemployed Republican colleagues in the legislature on the public/lobbyist teat, too.

Where, indeed, is that sense of being independent and self-sufficient?
